THE BIG PEOPLE: Your job is to help the smaller people

Create the base for their puppet.puppet1

If not already done, cut open the top and bottom of the long box for the arm.
Leave the flaps on for now.

 Sort the other bits.

Line up long box with back edge of bottom jaw. Draw around. With a knife, cut 3 sides, not the back, to make a flap.

Turn the lower jaw over. On the same edge, line the long box half across, then do the same on the upper jaw, do another half cut, the same as the lower jaw.

On the other side of the upper jaw, fix the top-head box in line with the back edge. For tricky joins, do this…

  • Fold, sticky side out and crease.
  • Stick one end on.
  • Smooth the other end up to join the boxes together.

puppet14Attach the long box to the underside of the head. Use the box flaps that as available. Cut the other flaps off if they are in the way.
Your puppet base is now complete.

Very important to make sure it is all well attached.

Check that the mouth is working and you haven’t taped it shut...it happens!

THE NOT-SO-BIG PEOPLE: Your job is to help the big person make the base for your puppet, add on all the bits and use your imagination when playing with it.

puppet15Choose the colour you have the most of. Plan before you stick..you can’t get more stickers!
Put on a base colour. No need to stick on area you know you are going to make a different colour.

puppet16This is going to an alligator. I am adding on a snout using part of an egg carton. I am also going to add
on a spiky spine and very large teeth!

puppet17and here is a finished puppet. No surprises that it is a puppy dog! I added floppy ears, and a tongue.

Getting the eyes and nose to stick was a challenge but I eventually found a glue that worked. (a small box works quite well too) If you are stuck with this (no pun intended), get some sticker and roll it so the sticky side is out. Then press this sticky roll on the back of the eye and press it on. Your whanau may have a better idea.

I have given you the base boxes and some other bits and pieces that might work for you. You will also have other things at home that you could use.

Take your time and let your imaginations fly!

Smoothing the stickers down really helps the final product.

Oh, and take a photo of your puppet and post it on the school facebook page to share what you have done.

TIP: Saving food packages etc is a really cool thing to do as they will always come in handy.
