KAURI TRIP TO TEPAPA
Recently, the Kauri team ventured into Te Papa to learn all about the early Pacific Voyagers. They had a very interesting trip and learned of the many ways the early navigators made their way around the Pacific Ocean. The presenter at Te Papa shared how the people of the Pacific used natural elements to make their way from island to island; for example using the sun, stars and the moon. The children of the Kauri team also looked at the different waka the early voyagers sailed in.
It was a very worthwhile learning experience, well supported by the Kauri team families. The children enjoyed exploring Te Papa.
Since the trip, the classes have been doing follow up work in the classroom.
The Squid
Room 23 saw the Colossal Squid during our recent visits to Te Papa. We were intrigued by the sheer size of it and had many questions. This prompted us to learn more about this amazing creature.
Room 23 dissected a squid in class. It was by no means the size of Colossal Squid at Te Papa, but the class were engaged and enjoyed the experience.
Here are a couple of fun facts that we found out:
- They're Masters of Disguise
Squid can change their skin colour to hide from other animals.
- They Have Many Arms
Squid have ten arms – eight short arms and two longer ones with suckers that help them grab their food.
- They Have Big Eyes
Many squid have huge eyes, some of the largest in the whole animal kingdom, to help them see in the deep, dark ocean.
- They Make Ink
If a squid feels scared, it can spray a cloud of ink to hide and get away from a predator.
