Room 4 Readers
Today I was treated to a visit by the Kiwi Readers group who were sharing their learning about steam engines. They have done a fantastic job with their research and presented their information clearly in a beautifully created book. It was wonderful to hear them reading so confidently as they shared their information.
ZEALANDIA KAURI TEAM TRIP
The Kauri Team – Rooms 23, 4 and 5 caught the bus into Karori and had a wonderful learning experience at Zealandia. The educators took the groups of children around the beautiful walkways and pointed out all the rare birds and other creatures like the tuatara. Able to be up so close is a unique feature of Zealandia, and everyone found it amazing. The children loved being so hands-on, and their interesting questions were welcomed by the staff.
Lots of parents joined the children of the Kauri team and their support of the trip was invaluable. A big thanks to them.
Here are some reports about the trip written by Room 4

At Zealandia we saw a kereru and we saw ducks. We also saw the NZ falcon; it flew over the trees. It was very loud. My favourite part of the trip was looking at all the birds

At Zealandia, our guide showed my dad’s group the diving duck. We tried to hold our breath as long as the ducks, but we couldn’t.
We saw a tuatara – it was hard to see but we spotted it in the bush.
Then we saw a kaka, it was very cool to see it picking the bark off the tree.
Later we saw the shags. We saw that one of the shags had two baby shags – one of them wanted food.
I really enjoyed studying all the birds.

Room 4 recently completed some beautiful paintings based on the flukes of humpback whales. All the children worked very hard on their creations using a range of media to complete their pictures.
ROOM 4'S MATARIKI BREAKFAST
The Monday after the Matariki Holiday, Room 4 held their annual Matariki Breakfast. The children made star shaped 'fairy' toast and drank hot milo with marshmallows. They ate on gold tablecloths decorated with glitter and stars. Everyone participated in making the breakfast a special time. Afterwards, the children shared their wishes for the year ahead.

The Star reading group in Room 4 – Jacob, Bodhi, Nixon and Aubree, have been studying the ORCA. As their Reading Response the children looked up National Geographic Kids website – 28 facts about the Orca. They chose some of them to present on their colourful poster.
- Males weigh more than the females
- They have a distinctive black and white skin
- Their top speed is 56 km/h
- Their life span is between 30 and 90 years.
- They usually stay near the coast.
The children also wrote interesting questions for others in the group to research. Lots of learning has been happening in Room 4.

The Kiwi Readers group shared some of the work they have been doing this term with me. They had to come up with arguments for and against rodeo after reading an article about this. I was impressed with the clear explanations they came up with and the confidence they showed when reading aloud and sharing their thoughts. Fantastic work Kiwi Readers
